True Light of True Light,
There are so many reasons
For us to be blind.
Our minds are darkened by fear and anger,
And as we stare into the black,
Endless abyss of uncertainty,
We hope to spot a glimmer,
Even a distant speck
Of illumination.
But we only stare in one direction,
Demanding that your Light meets us
Where our eyes insist on looking.
Our frustration grows.
Uncertainty swells,
And more anxiety becomes more anger.
We despise the darkness,
but we do not flee from it.
We dive further in.
Then there are days
Where we are not so much in darkness
As we are in a fog—
A thick, billowing cloud of confusion
That continues to expand.
We pursue Your Light,
We even sense its presence,
But we can’t tell from where it comes.
Layer upon layer of competing ideas,
Schedules,
Obstacles,
Discouraging and distracting voices,
Both from within and without;
We fumble around,
until we are are exhausted.
Let Your Light
Pierce the blanket of darkness
That our fear and anger
Have draped over our eyes.
Let Your Light dissolve the fog
Of preoccupations that swallow us.
Gather us from the various corners,
Caves, and crevices
To which we have scattered ourselves,
And let Your Light guide us back
To the place where you shine
Warmly upon us.
